I am having a hard time finding much that happened this summer that is really worth writing about.
But a few things that do come to mind are the changing patterns of the Striped Bass and their reluctance to bit when you are right over the top of them. At least this is the story I am repeatedly hearing from other anglers and have even experienced myself. I guess the solution as with everything, is to just keep on trying.

Live bait (alewifes) has also been troublesome. Throwing spots that were productive earlier have been tough lately. One very good fisherman I know spent about 3 hours starting at 1:30 AM throwing to a popular hotspot on the lake (under a light of course) only to get enough for the day’s fishing. One good input I have which obviously makes me feel good is that I have been able to keep alewifes alive all summer in a 100 gal. tank system on my dock without the use of chillers. I am happy to show off my system to anyone who wants to come see it.

Get ready for our Fall Tournament which will be held on October 13 this year. We are calling it the “Frank Skillman Fall Tournament” in honor of our dear friend and member Frank Skill man. He is missed very much by everyone who knew him. Look for your applications in with your bulletin emailing if you get your bulletins in that manner. Be sure to read in the September or October Bulletins on how to get your copy.

It is time to think about who you would like to lead your club in 2013. We need Board Member candidates. Please think about these important positions and consider giving something back to your club and fellow members by volunteering your time. Also your December Bulletin will be the last one I prepare. We need someone to step forward and help with this position also.

Be thinking about getting your Smith Mountain Striper Club information from our soon be to developed website. Even if you do not have a home computer, there are always friends or places like the library which can be used. We really do need to move forward into the digital age. The benefits are many.

I also need help with getting volunteers for the Nomination Committee, the Chili night, helping Franklin County support the kids on a derby day (Waid Park), our November Fish Fry, and lastly our Annual Banquet in December. Now is the time for all members to step forward and help share the load.

Now go fishing, Bob
